Lagos Sounds Like…
The African Shrine that was home to the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti, King Of Afrobeat, served as a base where the late musician spread the popularity of Afrobeat and live performance, which has now become standard among musicians. His son Femi Kuti continues in his father’s footsteps by performing and spreading the message against corruption four times a week at the Shrine in Ikeja, Lagos.
New artists like Wizkid, D’banj, Tuface, Keziah Jones and Asa are getting international and Pan-African recognition. The music they do is a mix of African and contemporary sounds where the beats could be hip-hop and the lyrics would be indigenous or pidgin language. Since the recent change from military dictatorship to democracy, artists and musicians have been emboldened to get their political messages across.
