In Scene Report, musicians from all over the globe fill us in on what’s going on sonically in their hometowns. This week Me N Ma Girls gives the scoop on Yangon, Myanmar.
Yangon is changing so fast right now. We are in the midst of becoming a true democracy. The music scene is breaking open with creativity that has been blocked by censorship and fear for so long. Soft-rock ballads and big power ballads still dominate mainstream, but the young people are beginning to embrace pop, R&B and hip-hop. Bands are realizing the need to write original music rather than doing ripped versions of international tracks. Freedom of expression is coming alive. Indie rockers, punks, drum-and-bass DJs, dubstep DJs and some great dance producers are emerging. Oh, and we nearly forgot! The first all-girl, all-original pop outfit is making waves and challenging what being a “Myanmar Girl” means today.
