Bands Worth Watching
Ahhhh Ainslie. Such a breath of fresh air. An amazing woman with an amazing voice (and an amazing band) who can quietly break your heart like no other. She has recently released a new album called You Go Your Way, I’ll Go Mine which is utterly gorgeous. We will certainly be doing more shows together in the future with this lovely lady and her lovely gentlemen.
ERMAHGERD! Such synth! Much of funk! Naughty daddy talk-box slow jam sex timez! Sex On Toast are very dirty, very hungry men who live together in a plush cave of carnal delights and feed each other hummus with their shirts off. The hot tub is ready, ready to fly into a galaxy of pleasure, your Dad is there and he is going to take away your library card because you need to go to school. Sex On Toast is that school. If you don’t go to school you will be expelled and you won’t be able to get a job and you won’t have money to buy Sex On Toast records and you will cry while looking at their poster above your bed every night for a bajillion years.
These ladies are both totally charming and utterly terrifying and a bucketload of weird. Melbourne has a great legacy of weird girl punk bands with absurdist lyrical content and super theatrical and cathartic performance. This band features our super awesome friend Cosima who also writes beautiful tunes on her banjo and is working with our friend Kirkis on a project called Gris Gris.
From the official website:
“Q#1: Who is Mandek Penha?
A: Mandek Penha is an ancient immaterial being. He is the creator of South Sarra. His knowledge and love provides us with our best defence against the greatest source of evil in The Natural Universe – The Hish’ry Cosh’ry.
Q#4: How does Mandek Penha protect us?
A: With Mandek Penha’s love in our hearts, Man shows great resilience to The Hish’ry Cosh’ry’s Negative Energies. It is through the understanding of The Father’s love that we fortify The Fighting Spirit Within and protect ourselves whilst living on earth. Mandek Penha also provides us with vital knowledge in our ongoing quest to completely remove The Hish’ry Cosh’ry’s influence on Earth.”
The Barons Of Tang have been assaulting audiences across the globe with their unique brand of “Gypsy Deathcore” for the last few years now. A powerhouse behemoth of crazy energy, they make music that is wild and often very hard to dance to. Try moshing to some traditional Bulgarian rhythm in 13 sometime and you’ll know what I’m talking about. This band encapsulates a certain corner of the Melbourne scene where folk traditions, punk, jazz and metal all meet to make a dirty, dirty party.
