In Scene Report, musicians from all over the globe fill us in on what’s going on sonically in their hometowns. This week the Complainer, aka Wojciech Kucharczyk, gives the scoop on Silesia, Poland.
Silesia is a vast region with many cities. It is hard to describe each city because it is all a kind of saturated metropolis with each city being very different and each close to another. Talking about the region is easier although some traveling is necessary (and worthwhile). My favorite towns are Cieszyn, Katowice and Bytom—all of them connected by a network of visible and invisible paths and routes. Silesia’s specialties are its festivals: OFF Festival in August (This year they will have Iggy Pop And The Stooges, Thurston Moore, Swans, Shangaan Electro, Demdike Stare, Andy Stott, more than 90 bands performing), Nowa Muzyka in September (This year will see Mouse On Mars, Hot Chip, Gang Gang Dance on the bill) and Ars Cameralis in November (This year’s lineup is not yet announced, but last year we had everything from Jane Birkin, Bill Callahan, Efterklang to M83, El Guincho…). All these festivals are taking place in Katowice, the region’s capitol.
