In Scene Report, musicians from all over the globe fill us in on what’s going on sonically in their hometowns. This week the Astronauts, a hip-hop music collective (featuring Mont Brown, Pace-O Beats, Ant Dior, Finesse, Zah Marley, Dot Com and Spic Nasty), give the scoop on Philadelphia, PA.
The music scene in Philly is jam packed with young talent. The talent is spread across all different genres, but there’s a very strong underground hip-hop presence here in Philly. You can always look forward to a few good live shows every month. Summer’s coming up, so they’ll be mad festivals and outdoor concerts going on, a few of which we’ll be performing at!
As of late, the fashion and style that you were used to seeing in Philly is changing (Ex: big beards and Ralph Lauren polos a la the State Property Era). Now you’ve got kids in the ghetto riding skateboards and rocking the mohawk. This is the beginning of a whole new wave for our city. For a long time our music scene, especially hip-hop, was excessively violent and drug-related “battle raps,” normally performed in front a camera and posted on YouTube. Everyone had “beef.” I think we’ve gotten past that now, and artists are really focusing on making good records and putting on a good show. That’s what it’s all about.
