Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to the weekly CMJ charts. In the Chart Discovery column, we highlight exciting artists, albums, and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This week’s favorites come from WHPK in Chicago, IL, and WNCW in Spindale, NC.

Doc Aquatic at WNCW

Asheville, NC, trio Doc Aquatic landed the No. 19 spot at WNCW’s Top 200 this week with their first full-length release, Tombs. It’s a collection of ten glossy and ambient indie rock songs that mixes light synths and samples with a sunny, classic rock sensibility. Both catchy and smart, it’s an album that makes the perfect soundtrack to a Sunday drive on a gray afternoon.

Torn Hawk at WHPK

Torn Hawk is the moniker of Brooklyn based trance-rocker, Luke Wyatt. This week, Wyatt looped his way into the No. 12 spot at WHPK’s Top 200 with Through The Force Of Will, an album full of instrumentals meant to hype you up during any part of your day. Streets On Fire is full of stuttering strums and dissonant chords, ideal for aggressive strutting and/or a freaky strobe light-fueled party.
