Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to our weekly charts. In the Chart Discovery weekly column, we’ll highlight exciting artists, albums and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This week’s favorites come from WHPK in Chicago and WNYU in New York City.

Super Wild Horses on WHPK

This one is less of a discovery and more of an affirmation. Super Wild Horses was, hands down, the best band I saw at 2012′s BIGSOUND in Brisbane. And just this week WHPK played the Melbourne garage duo’s just-released sophomore album, Crosswords, enough to land it a No. 12 spot on the Chicago station’s Top 30.

Quicksails on WNYU

Quicksails, a noisy solo project from Chicago’s Ben Billington, made it to No. 13 on WNYU’s chart this week. For an album released on the notoriously inaccessible Spectrum Spools label, Mayville Dream‘s space-dream drones are remarkably radio-friendly. Each song is quick and delightful.
