Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to our weekly charts. In the Chart Discovery column, we highlight exciting artists, albums and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This week’s favorites come from KSUA in Fairbanks, AK and WMUL in Huntington, WV.

KSUA’s No. 1 pick this week is SEENMR’s Chinatown Tape. Defintely influenced by hip-hop and relying heavily on beats and bass, SEENMR blends a huge range of samples against clean, simple drum machines. The slow groove of the bass keeps the album relaxed and cool, but still inspires plenty of toe-tapping.

The Snowy Owls on WMUL

Summer [EP] is the most recent effort from Richmond-based shoegaze quartet The Snowy Owls. Featuring tender, quiet, daydream vocals set against fuzzy reverb, the album is both sunny and hazy. The floaty warmth of the EP is the perfect reminder that even though back-to-school merchandise is once again in stores and your teacher friends are whining on Facebook, summer isn’t quite over yet.
