Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to the weekly CMJ charts. In the Chart Discovery column, we highlight exciting artists, albums, and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This round’s favorites come to us via KZSU in Stanford, CA, and CHIRP Radio in Chicago, IL.

Saintes on KZSU

A few weeks ago we noticed a pattern of dreamy French artists hitting the charts. Add une plus to that group: Saintes, the mystery-splattered, lo-fi solo project of Parisian Anne-Sophie Le Creurer. Saintes’ 2013 pastel grunge release, Horizontal/Vertical, hit No. 18 on KZSU’s chart this week.

Ne-Hi on CHIRP Radio

CHIRP Radio has introduced us to some cool artists from it’s own Chicago scene, and this week is no different. Bringing some retro-cool to the station’s charts is local reverb-loving four-piece Ne-Hi, whose newly released, self-titled album just landed at No. 16.
