Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to our weekly charts. In the Chart Discovery column, we highlight exciting artists, albums and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This week’s favorites come from WRIR in Richmond, VA and KAOS in Olympia, WA.

Ohbliv on WRIR

The Richmond, VA-based producer Ohbliv’s latest EP Outsider Soul got some hometown love this week when WRIR charted it at No. 15 on their Top 30 playlist. Undeniably cool and laid back beats work together with a little hip hop and a little soul to create a calm and completely pleasant vibe despite all the tracks being so short. A little sensual soul and boom bap round out the tracks and keep them alive (so as to avoid being too relaxed) and keep them oh-so cool.

Gino Matteo on KAOS

Gino Matteo’s sophomore effort came to our attention this week after landing a spot on KAOS’s playlist. The album is a blend of hot, sticky blues, gospel and, of course, some rock. Organs, harmonica, backing harmonies, steady rhythm and, of course, plenty of electric guitar set the stage for singable lyrics. You can tell he’s worked with some of the blues greats like B.B. King, but he still exudes a style all his own: equally SoCal as Mississippi Delta.
