The Milkstains

The Milkstains

Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to the weekly CMJ charts. In the Chart Discovery column, we highlight exciting artists, albums, and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This round’s favorites come to us via WRIR in Richmond, VA, WMHC in South Hadley, MA, and WCBN in Ann Arbor, MI.

The Milkstains at WRIR

Rollicking along with a knack for blending hard-hitting indie rock and psych-surf sensibilities, this Richmond, VA, trio landed in the No. 17 spot at WRIR this week. Band interests include, “Having a hootenanny and a real humdinger.” While we’re intrigued about that humdinger, tracks like Intimidator (You’re Dale To Me Now) show off the band’s capabilities in the high-energy punk department.

Teen Suicide at WMHC

WMHC’s Loud Rock charts sported Teen Suicide at No. 2 this week with the Maryland band’s track Lonely Boy Goes To A Rave. It’s a lo-fi, guitar-heavy indie rock anthem that tells the tragic tale of, well, a lonely kid who goes to a rave. No surprise there, but the track also packs some awesome vocal and guitar hooks into its two-minute run.

WLISPS at WCBN

Two-minutes of buzzing capped off by five-minutes of rhythmic stuttering landed WLISPS in WCBN’s Top 200 Adds this week. The ambient track ACCOYLD tosses in some surprise breaks, percolating synths, and swirls of noise before stripping away everything but the underlying buzz that has sneakily held the entire track up.
