Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to our weekly charts. In the Chart Discovery column, we highlight exciting artists, albums and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This week’s favorites come from KEXP in Seattle, WA and WCBN in Ann Arbor, MI.

Hibou on KEXP

Rounding out KEXP’s playlist this week at the Number 30 position is Dunes, the latest from 19-year-old Seattle native Peter Michel. The 5-track EP features ethereal pop with staccato drums and dreamy, highly textural guitars. The combination produces tracks with a warmth, lightness, and brightness that sounds like sounds like summer frockling in slow motion—lazing in wild flowers, playing in chilly river waters, the hot sun on your shoulders as you crack open a can of something cold and refreshing.

Rebel Kind on WCBN

Number five at WCBN’s playlist this week is the dreamy folk of Rebel Kind, the solo project of Ann Arbor’s Bad Indians guitarist/drummer, Autumn Welti. Laurel Canyon is ’60s girl group catchiness, but with subdued vocals set against acoustic guitars, rhythmic tambourine, and the occasional use of electric fuzz. Slightly creepy and fairly dark themes find a way to be coy and playful through Wetli’s layered vocals and the overall cheerfulness of the instrumentation despite its folk-style sparseness.
