Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to the weekly CMJ charts. In the Chart Discovery column, we highlight exciting artists, albums, and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This week’s favorites come from WSUM in Madison, WI and WIUX in Bloomington, IN.

Goosebumps at WSUM

Madison, Wisconsin got a blast of NYC hardcore this week from debacle-rockers Goosebumps. The atonal guitars and mega-distorted bass line of the 53-second sprint Best Friend landed them in the Loud Rock Adds over at WSUM. It’s a perfectly abrasive track, and offers an impressively produced preview of their forthcoming Scared To See A Doctor 7-inch. Back in January, the band brought their scum-core sound to WFMU for a live studio session, which you can check out below.

Fizzbang at WIUX

Indie-rockers Fizzbang jumped from the basements of Bloomington, Indiana and into the Top Adds at WIUX with their EP Temper Temper. These guys have a knack for crafting a catchy chorus, and include just enough distorted rock n’ roll guitars to keep an edge to their sound. It’s a group of songs that are bound to make any undergrad throw their elbows around.
