Returning for a second week in a row on CJSW’s charts, this time at No. 22, is the debut full-length from Black Heel Marks. Feel Free is full of guitar-driven surf rock melodies set against driving electronic rhythms, punk rock shrieks, ghostly vocals, and spastic, frantic synths to create a whirling, intense and chaotic sound that hovers right on the brink of spinning out of control. It’s completely perfect for a late-night dance party.
Showing up at a solid No. 25 on Spinnaker Radio this week is Hit Vibes from Saint Pepsi. A textbook example of the possibly dead/possibly-not-quite-dead internet-born vaporwave, Saint Pepsi’s latest full length is heavily layered and sample-based, drawing from warped pieces of schmaltz like disco and chintzy, velour-covered R&B. Hit Vibes seamlessly mixes R&B, soul, pop and a little Woody Allen to create smooth funk and feel-good, catchy grooves under the shiny gloss of programmable synths. While mostly fast-paced and upbeat, the record does have a few slow jams for you to catch your breath as you slow dance with Huggy Bear under the discoball.
