Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to our weekly charts. In the Chart Discovery column, we highlight exciting artists, albums and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This week’s favorites come from WXDU in Durham, NC and CFUV in Victoria, BC.

Arrows Out on WXDU

The western surfgaze of Arrows Out’s brand new release, This Picture Recalls A City, claimed a solid No. 3 position at WXDU this week. The instrumental four-piece’s sound is often quiet and if it recalls a city, it’s like a city in the quiet of the night, just before newspapers start hitting doorsteps. Other tracks like “Signal” are full of solid percussion and vivid, bright guitar that make you think maybe the sun hasn’t gone down yet or, at least, the neon of the bar hasn’t been turned off yet.

Bankrobber at CFUV

The surf guitar continues in CFUV’s No. 2 pick, Life’s Nutso by Bankrobber. This time the shiny, echoing surf guitar is paired with far-away, almost eerie vocals, and electronic sound effects. Some tracks take a more in-your-face approach, relying more heavily on gritty guitar and pounding drums while bringing those vocals quite a bit closer. A quirky album of rich arrangement that manages to sound cohesive even with such genre bending between tracks.
