Scott Walker’s Bish Bosch, the final album out of a thematic trilogy that includes Tilt and The Drift, is a complex contradiction, much like the man himself—dense with convoluted metaphors, dark imagery and even low-brow fart humor. It is a difficult album to process but contains nuggets of brilliance scattered throughout the cinematic intensity and uncomfortable lulls. Almost seemingly designed to offend, Bish Bosch could soundtrack a particularly nightmarish David Lynch film.

The album starts off with 30 seconds of pounding percussion, followed by Walker’s deep baritone moan wailing throughout “See You Don’t Bump His Head,” the first track. The album is a mishmash of different musical genres and practically parodies more serious types like jazz and opera. The longest track, “SDSS1416+13B (Zercon, A Flagpole Sitter),” is musically dull yet lyrically shocking, with Walker most memorably moaning, “I’ve severed my reeking gonads/Fed them to your shrunken face.” The most pleasant song to listen to is the groovy first single, “Epizootics!,” a jazzy, Hawaiian-influenced hula number with an appropriately scary music video accompanying it.

While Bish Bosch may not be the most easy album to digest, it doesn’t lack for talent or shock value. It is also rife with literary and cultural references, beginning with the title: In an interview with Pitchfork, Walker explained that Bish Bosch is an interpretation of the U.K. idiom “bish bash bosh,” meaning job done, as well as a reference to the bastardization of bitch and to the artist Hieronymus Bosch. Obviously Walker enjoys wordplay as much as mind games.

The 25th anniversary of Amherst rock legends Dinosaur Jr.’s cult classic, You’re Living All Over Me, was celebrated spectacularly at a sold-out Terminal 5 show last Saturday night. Special guests included Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Frank Black (Pixies) and Johnny Marr (the Smiths) among other indie rock icons. The cavern-like atmosphere of Terminal 5 was easily overcome by J Mascis’ wall of amps. The all-ages venue was heavy with pot smoke and palpable excitement, hosting its typical set of rowdy teenagers who crowd-surfed and moshed near the stage as well as old school punks singing along from the balconies.

After a fantastic rendition of “Thumb” from 1991’s Green Mind, featuring flautist Suzanne Thorpe from Mercury Rev, the first half of Dino Jr.’s set was dedicated to a full performance of You’re Living All Over Me. The album may have been originally released back in December 1987, but it sounded as vital and urgent as ever, with tracks like “Sludgefeast” and “In A Jar” remaining harrowing highlights.

This was followed by a series of hits including new songs off of their latest LP, I Bet On Sky, a cover of “The Boy With The Thorn In His Side” with Johnny Marr on vocals and a ferocious version of “Tame” growled by Frank Black (who threw a poster into the crowd). The band closed with the highlight of the set, “Don’t” from Bug, with Kim Gordon rolling around the stage like a wounded banshee, shrieking the only lyric, “Whyyyy don’t you like me?”

The encore songs were equally incredible, with Tommy Stinson (The Replacements) and Fred Armisen (Portlandia) assisting on a cover of Stooges’ “TV Eye” and finally ending with “Freak Scene.”

Earlier this month we gave you a preview of the upcoming collaborative Liquid EP between rapper Le1f and producer Boody, and, now that the EP is officially out on Boysnoize, the group has released a hilariously literal video for the track “Soda.”

Impressively enough, the video looks like the song sounds: glazed in bright colors and syrupy sweet. The sound effects fizzle and bubble just like soda pop—you have to wonder if they’re planning something similar for the “Sweet Tea” track. Directed by Sam Jones, the candy colored video is a spoof of the familiar Diet Coke and Mentos experiment, replacing the sweets with Le1f soda and Boody mints. Check it out, below.

There’s a lot going on in the Crystal Ark’s futuristic new music video for “We Came To.” The Crystal Ark is electronic music whiz and former LCD Soundsystem touring member Gavin Russom’s collaboration with Spanish songstress Viva Ruiz. The song itself is a feverish disco track with murmured Spanish vocals and a hypnotic, pulsating beat.

Viva Ruiz directed the video, which features clips of Russom in some sort of extraterrestrial dome equipped with a giant screen and a synthesizer reminiscent of Cerebro in the X-Mansion, and other members of the band dressed in all white workmen outfits splattered with multicolored paint wielding various tools and dancing together. Ruiz shows up sporting some Edward Scissorhand-like claws at one point, and, well, maybe this is just one of those videos you have to watch for yourself. Check it out, below.

Los Angeles director Eric Green has launched a Kickstarter in an effort to raise funds for his new music documentary about the rise of shoegaze, Beautiful Noise. The film will feature interviews, concert footage, home videos and other clips from influential bands like Cocteau Twins, the Jesus And The Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine.

The documentary has taken Green eight years to put together and is already in post-production but requires more funds to pay for clearances and licensing costs. Other bands and artists featured include Slowdive, Lush, Curve, Swervedriver, Ride, Chapterhouse, Trent Reznor, Billy Corgan, Robert Smith and more.

Depending on how much you donate, you can earn an autographed poster, a limited edition DVD of the documentary, your name in the “special thanks” section of the end credits, or an invite to the festival screening or premiere. Check out the trailer, below.
His latest LP, The Inner Mansions, was released November 6 on Lefse. It is exactly the sort of dreamy, electronic, sparse sound that you’ve come to expect from chillwave complete with delicately processed vocals and the possibility of lulling you to sleep. Nevertheless, it is an unapologetically gorgeous piece of work and one that is better appreciated without considering the confines of its genre or how the chillwave brand has become passé in most circles. Clearly Jamison doesn’t care whether his music is trendy or not, so why should you?

The Inner Mansions seems to be an attempt to reach some sort of synthy, spiritual musical nirvana. As Jamison puts it, his goal was to “express the spirituality that runs so deeply through my life, through an album of ‘electronic music’” because he was so horrified by a negative review of his previous album, All Of Us, Together that claimed his music had “no soul.” The title of the album is named after a Christian book detailing the “’inner mansions’ of the soul, each one representing a different level of closeness in intimacy to God.”

Most of the songs have religious titles like “The Heart Of God,” a vocal-based track that’s somewhat reminiscent of a chorus of angels backed up by church-like sounds, and “Spirit,” which features a smattering of mystical ringing effects blended together with a dancier house beat. Some of the songs, such as “By Love,” with its chirping bird samples and shimmering beats, sound like they’ve been put together using samples from some nature sound effect CD intended to relax you at an aromatherapy spa. “Union,” featuring Frankie Rose, is more fast-paced, almost rock-like at the beginning and probably the only song with easily decipherable lyrics.

While The Inner Mansions doesn’t stray too far from previous work, it does have the sort of celestial, otherworldly quality to it that I think Jamison was trying to achieve. And, perhaps most importantly for its creator, it has a soul.

Walking into Joe’s Pub for the Mirah concert, I was not at all surprised to see that the line curling around the entrance was half made up of bespectacled girls holding hands. The politically outspoken folk songstress has long identified as a lesbian and maintained a solid LGBTQ following.

She opened with the jazzy, otherworldly “Luminescence,” softly intermingling her lilting, honeyed voice with her cellist’s precise melodies. The song lent a wistful, refined air to the already romantic, subdued setting. Joe’s Pub is a deceptively divey name for the venue, an elegant room with candlelit tables and a full dinner menu. A few songs from her 2005 LP, a(spera), were played, which were characteristically delicate and executed masterfully by the quartet composed of Mirah’s crystal-clear voice and guitar playing, a viola player, cellist and vibraphonist/drummer. The crowd-pleaser of the night was obviously the simple, uplifting “Monument,” which was met with most of the fans cheering and singing along to the quintessentially Mirah song, complete with righteous, humanistic lyrics “We have a right to insist to be free and brave/If that should cease to exist/I’d throw my heart away.”

Mirah alternated between sweet, uplifting folk melodies and more complexly composed songs. There was only one song that I found questionable, which was an incongruous mashup of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Who’ll Stop The Rain” and Jay Z’s “Empire State Of Mind,” a tribute to her recent move to New York/Hurricane Sandy. I’m totally willing to look past the fact that she sang what I find to be one of the most annoying, ubiquitous songs of 2009 because, well, who isn’t excited to live in NYC? Also, she managed to lull me into a state of folk-rock bliss so sweet that by the end of the night I was considering donating all of my remaining funds to whatever highly politically charged cause she happened to be singing about.

“Before We Run” may be the final track off of Yo La Tengo’s new LP, Fade, but it’s the first single the Jersey-based band has released thus far. In a press release Matador compares Fade to the band’s 1997 release, the cult favorite, I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One, and though only time will tell if this statement is accurate, “Before We Run” is certainly a promising preview of the album.

The song showcases YLT’s signature sound: sweet and shoegazey with soft guitar and dreamy drum beats. It’s accompanied by a charmingly animated video by Emily Hubley, featuring multicolored polka dots flickering and dancing atop an overgrown tree. Check it out, below.
Fade will be released January 15, 2013 on Matador Records. A Deluxe LP is available for preorder on the Matador site printed on rainbow foil and with a bonus 7″ containing two covers: “I Saw The Light” by Todd Rundgren and “Move to California” by Times New Viking. The deluxe edition also includes a MP3 download featuring an additional untitled 11 minute bonus track!
Yo La Tengo will support the new release with a North American tour with Arizona indie rockers Calexico.
Montreal’s Purity Ring has finally released an official music video for “Lofticries,” over a year past the song’s internet debut. Purity Ring recruited AG Rojas (Jack White’s “Sixteen Saltines,” Spiritualized’s “Hey Jane”) to direct it. The video takes on a creepy, abstract and almost nightmarish tone, shifting through the lives of several different protagonists. According to a press release, the concept behind the surreal clip covers a “feverish dream of vast ideas: conception, birth, sickness, death.” See for yourself:
Phil Jones has announced a new album under his solo moniker, Dog Bite, called Velvet Changes due to be released via Carpark on February 5, 2013. Previously the keyboardist for Washed Out, Jones is now creating inspired, dreamy music of his own. The LP’s first single, “Prettiest Pills,” is wonderfully dark, softly melodic and slightly psychedelic with an upbeat ’80s rock twist. Hopefully we’ll hear more singles from the album as the year progresses. Listen to it, below.
Silkies came into being one night in Austin when Caufield Schnug and Lira Mondal impulsively decided to write a song together and within a few minutes of jamming they created the sunny, jangle-pop tune “Like One.” Though they previously played in other groups together, it wasn’t until the duo collaborated without extra bandmates that they were satisfied with the results, allowing spontaneity to guide their songwriting process.

Having relocated to Boston, where Schnug is pursuing a Ph.D at Harvard and Mondal is working as a chef, the pair recently put out an EP on Heart Throb/Young Latitudes. Today CMJ is premiering the charming music video for “Like One,” which features a series of what seem to be first takes of the band bopping around their neighborhood, playing with maps and generally being themselves.

It has a tossed-off, ramshackle quality that fits with the pair’s sugar-rush, garage rock aesthetic. Check it out, below.
San Francisco rapper DaVinci released his second LP today, The MOEna Lisa, as a free download and stream at SWTBRDS. Following 2010′s The Day The Turf Stood Still and last year’s Feast Or Famine EP, this LP serves as the final chapter in a trilogy of albums dedicated to the Fillmore District of San Francisco where DaVinci was raised. There are no gimmicks to his music. The Bay Area MC sticks to his tried-and-true recipe of classic beats, dry rap vocals and somber lyrics. Freddie Gibbs and the Jacka are guests on The MOEna Lisa, which features production by Al Jieh, Ammbush (of Drums And Ammo), Merk, Blunt, Champagne Clique, Keyes and Block Beattaz.

Listen to it below, and read through DaVinci’s own explanation of the album.
This album is dedicated to a young Thorobred in heaven, Lil D. You kept askin me when this album was finna drop and it’s finally here. Im still devastated That yo time on earth with us was so short, barely even 15 years. I never got a chance to tell you brah but you had a impact on my life big enough to really wake my game up. Yo hunger to live life to the fullest was like no other my nigga. You wouldnt let me leave the spot without asking a million questions about street shit or rap shit. Lol. I definitely wish I could have been more hands on with giving you advice more often too. You a big part of the reason for the message in my songs. After i heard you was gone I wanted to fall back from the mic and just say fuk it. It wasnt til i thought about how much you admired the opportunity I have to rap and i started to feel ungrateful and selfish. Fuk that, I’ma go hard for my nigga and always keep that resiliant spirit you had alive. This Album is dedicated to you! Tell everybody else we lost we gon see em on the other side! Love you Lil brah.

Banks is Paul Banks’ third solo album and the first not released under the pseudonym Julian Plenti. Julian Plenti was an alias he created to represent the music he had written before joining Interpol, and now that he’s gotten that out of the way, he feels free to use his real name. That sense of liberation informs Banks, which was released this week on Matador, approximately 10 years after the first Interpol album, the acclaimed Turn On The Bright Lights.

It’s difficult not to compare Banks to Interpol because most of its songs don’t sound much different than the type of puffed-up tracks offered up on the band’s 2007 record, Our Love To Admire, and the best ones here, such as the charmingly subdued “Arise, Awake” and wistful closer “Summertime Is Coming,” wouldn’t be out of place on early Interpol EPs, like Fukd I.D. #3. His songwriting on this album simply doesn’t stray far enough from the well-traveled, melancholic Interpol territory to force you to consider him as a new entity.

Every song seems to be influenced by the bitterness that can often accompany aging, and these themes are highlighted by Banks’s signature confounding lyrics, with some odd samples of background chatter scattered here and there. The album opener and first single, “The Base,” pulsates and drags along mechanically, with awkward shifts in the song that don’t lighten or humanize the situation at all. Banks’s dry rah-rahs in “Young Again” are a perfect example of the stale air of disinterest and the dry, disaffected tone the album wallows in.

It’s unfortunate that Banks isn’t about finding serenity, gaining wisdom, falling in love or something—anything a bit more lighthearted. That type of thematic variety might have given Banks the buoyancy to differentiate his solo work from his already anxiety-filled past efforts. The passive, languid tone of this album often translates into emotionless muck. His songs could also benefit from outspoken anger and aggressiveness—the flashes of feeling Interpol used to display on its early songs—something that might lift him out of the musical sinkhole he seems to be in now.

Producer/musician Chaz Bundick, the man behind Toro Y Moi, is releasing his third LP, Anything In Return, on Carpark January 22. The album will have more of a hip-hop influence than his previous work. The album’s first single, “So Many Details,” is rife with typical chillwave synth effects and ghostly vocals, but this is also layered with jungly drumbeats and darker lyrics to create a moodier, more complex sound than we’d normally expect from Bundick. Stream it below:
