Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to our weekly charts. In the Chart Discovery column, we highlight exciting artists, albums and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This week’s favorites come from WNMC in Traverse City, MI and WRUW in Cleveland, OH.

Red Tail Ring on WNMC

Holding down the No. 1 position at WNMC is the Kalamazoo-based Red Tail Ring. Comprised of a degree-holding ethnomusicologist and student of traditional Finnish music, the folk duo’s sound is loving tip of the hat to the folk revivalist movement. Playing both traditional murder ballads (a favorite of the Scots-Irish Appalachian tradition) and tunes with more modern sentiments, Michael Beauchamp and Laurel Premo highlight guitar, banjo, dobro, fiddle and mandolin alongside folksy harmonies. Their new material fits in seamlessly with the old traditions in a perfect marriage of bluegrass and modernity.

Boxcar Lilies on WRUW

A more modern folksy sound takes the 19th position at WRUW in Cleveland, Ohio. Boxcar Lilies’ album Sugar Shack isn’t the Norman Petty pop of Jimmy Gilmer And The Fireballs, but does retain some of the classic blend of electric and acoustic instrumentation against pretty tunes about love and life. The women of Boxcar Lilies bring a broad musical background to their Americana sound. Before forming the Americana trio, Jenny Goodspeed was writing in the style of ’70s singer songwriters, Stephanie Marshall’s sound was contemporary Nashville and rock and Katie Clarke played traditional country and bluegrass. Together, they highlight a mutual love of three-part harmonies backed by warm guitar, that fabulous rhythmic clawhammer banjo, electric bass, drums and even the occasional washboard. Rooted in folk tradition, their sound is completely contemporary in the vein of Gillian Welch or Neil Young.

Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to our weekly charts. In the Chart Discovery weekly column, we highlight exciting artists, albums and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This week’s favorites come from Pizza FM in Urbana, IL and New Concord, NH’s WMCO.

Grandkids on Pizza FM

Standing at a solid No. 2 position on newly formed Pizza FM’s Top 30 this week is the new full-length album from Grandkids. Bright imagery combined with a vast, expansive sonic landscape produces a charming confidence without being pretentious, underscoring the band’s self-described “humblecore” sound. The album is full of orchestrated strings lead by Vivian McConnell’s lush, floating vocals—she’s spent the past few years harmonizing with her brother Stan in the group Santah.

Timeshare by Grandkids

Met City on WMCO

Sliding in at No. 26 at WMCO is Stokholm Fancy, the first album from the group Met City. It’s a whimsical introspective journey much like that of the classical European wayfarer. The group’s indie pop sound is thoroughly modern while paying tribute to the once popular Baroque stylings of the mid-19th century. The romantic themes conjure up images of lace and silk against a more sophisticated Peter Pan freedom and Alice In Wonderland exploration.

Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to our weekly charts. In the new Chart Discovery weekly column, we’ll highlight exciting artists, albums and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This week’s favorites come from KRFC in Fort Collins, CO, and Duke University’s WXDU.

Congress on KRFC

While I admit that I have heard the Congress before, I never really paid enough attention to the band until I saw its latest EP, The Loft Tapes, show up at a solid No. 5 position on KRFC’s top 30 playlist this week. The group’s laid-back groove captures a sound that is at once modern and reminiscent of the good old days of Motown recordings. It is the perfect salve for those of us ready for hanging out in parks on warm summer days. Calling Richmond, VA, a part-time home (and at least one member of the band having been born and bred there), it seems only natural that rich, soulful vocals and bluesy guitars are a staple of the Congress’s sound. The EP consists of seven soul covers that are fresh reinterpretations of the classics but still retain the heart of the originals. Recorded in an old masonic temple in Colorado, guitarist Scott Lane and engineer Logan Muckler mixed the tracks on an eight-channel reel-to-reel tape machine as “a tribute to the songs and studio techniques that have influenced the band over the years.” The EP has been released both digitally and on vinyl.

Drag Sounds on WXDU

Appearing at No. 4 at WXDU this week is the Greensboro-based Drag Sounds. Feelin’ It showcases garage-fuzz pop that sounds like what you’d expect from a ’60s group if it had traveled to the future and back, picking up some ’80s punk and mixing it with lots of Lou Reed. The tracks are loose and open, perfect for a band whose self-described agenda is to “have a good time and be really loud.”

Poet’s Row on OpenAir

Technically, I noticed them for the first time last week, but I just couldn’t pass up an opportunity to mention them after they appeared for a second time (this time at a solid No. 12 position) on OpenAir’s playlist. Named after the neighborhood in Denver where the group met, the acoustic folk duo is getting some serious love back home in Denver after being nominated for Best Folk Band at the Westword Music Showcase. The self-titled record is heavy on harmonies between Mickey Bakas’s melancholy and Emily Hobbs’s sweet voices that sound almost spooky when paired with the fiddle and cozy comfortable when backed by guitar (and crickets!). So pull that blanket a little closer, curl up with a steaming mug of tea and pretend you are watching snow from a log cabin out West.

Poet's Row by Poet's Row

Gathered Ghosts on KZUU

Debuting this week at a solid No. 10 position at KZUU is the self-described “dream jangle” of Gathered Ghosts. The group originally started as a solo project for Craft Spells guitarist Javier Suarez, but this second full-length album finds him joined by Andreanna Wilson, James Kasinger and Kevin Rinker. The additional members bring heaps of dreaminess to the record as the synths, percussion and vocals no longer allow the guitar to dominate the lo-fi pop tunes. The jangle is still there, but the warm synths leave you floating as you dance through the heartfelt tunes.

This week’s favorites come from CFRU in Guelph, Ontario, and CHMR in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Legato Vipers on CFRU

Holding a solid position at No. 2 on CFRU’s playlist this week are Legato Vipers. The group’s sound is a throwback to ’60s instrumental surf rock that is full of reverb and a gritty edge that adds a modern lean and keeps the sound fresh. Maybe surf punk would be a better descriptor. The eight-song Quick Slug EP is the first from the group. Available only digitally, the EP can be purchased with a switchblade comb or a leather-wrapped flask, seemingly perfect accompaniments for the genre and the tongue-in-cheek playfulness in the group’s sound.

Heidi Happy, a Swiss artist who is seeing some serious love on the charts back in her home country, is creeping her way across the pond with her latest album. She was played on two other stations this week, but we first noticed her when she snagged the No. 30 spot on CHMR’s Top 30 playlist. The 26-year-old’s soft folksy vocals are joined by a slew of instruments including the glockenspiel, organ, strings, and, of course, guitar. She provides her own backing vocals, which weave together seamlessly amidst playful hints of electro-pop. Each track is a little different from the last and makes full use of the wide variety of instrumentation Heidi and her collaborators brought together with an overarching feeling of, well, happiness.

Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to our weekly charts. In the new Chart Discovery weekly column, we’ll highlight exciting artists, albums and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This week’s favorites come from WXYC in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and WNRN in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Charting a solid No. 4 is Sun To Sun, the debut album from Anna And Elizabeth. Recorded in Floyd, Virginia, located only a couple of hours from WXYC’s Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and home of the ever-growing Floydfest, the album establishes these two ladies as curators of the Southern musical tradition. Acoustic banjo and fiddle work together to create the music that, according to them, “is tricky to separate from the sounds of crickets in the mountains all summer, the laughter between tunes in our kitchen, the patience of small stitches, the sight of an old woman flatfooting with her walker.” Unlike a lot of their peers, Anna And Elizabeth sound natural and not contrived, as though Memaw and Papa taught them these instruments and songs while settin’ on a sun-dappled and crooked porch high in the Blue Ridge.

DJs at WNRN in Charlottesville, Virginia, must be daydreaming about trading in their February snow for summer as Aussie group Alpine landed at No. 26 on the station’s charts this week. The six-piece electro-pop group features dual female vocals over keys, synths and bright percussion. Already garnering serious critical acclaim in the southern hemisphere, Alpine is no stranger to touring the U.S. and after releasing a series of demos, partnered with Votiv to bring the A For Alpine full-length Stateside. The airy vocal harmonies blended with crisp and jaunty instrumentation produces a record of completely danceable pop perfect for daydreams of cruising the Australian coasts.

Thursday, October 18, marked the return of CMJ Music Marathon’s College Day, presented by TuneIn. College Day offers a chance for college and community radio stations to come together for radio-centric panels and a chance to mix and mingle with fellow radio and industry members.

The day-long event started off with breakfast and a chance for stations to talk with each other and with industry professionals. It was immediately followed with It Takes A Village, a panel focusing on the importance of a station’s relationship with its school and community. Taking into consideration the delicate situation many college radio stations are in, ways to prove your importance to schools and still carve a niche in society were explored. The panel featured music directors from across the country and Manu Taylor, station manager of 95bFM in Auckland, New Zealand.

Next up was the ever popular Music Directors’ Summit. The annual panel has become known for offering music directors a unique opportunity to come together and let loose with their frustrations, to share their exciting new ideas and to learn how to improve their stations. This year’s Music Directors’ Summit dealt with issues like bullying, encouraging morale in small stations and how to accurately gauge what music is being played in the station and how often.

Lunch and live music broke up the day and provided more opportunity to chat with peers and to vote for the College Radio Awards before the final panel of the day got everyone’s creative juices flowing. Appealing to stations big and small, terrestrial and online-only, DIY For All Sizes explored how to put together events, organize fundraisers and station awareness while running as efficiently and effectively as possible.

The day also offered live music from Australian artists like San Cisco, Emma Louise and Jinja Safari, courtesy of Sounds Australia. In addition to the music, Sounds Australia gave away a trip to Perth, Australia, and the chance to attend the Wami Festival. Additional excitement came from TuneIn’s give-away of a JamBox and CMJ’s official apparel sponsor Champion’s specially designed College Day 2012 T-shirts.

The day culminated with the College Radio Awards, the only college/noncom radio awards nominated by and voted on by those in the industry. An opportunity to recognize the best and brightest for their hard work and dedication. Awards were kindly provided by official College Day poster artist Print Mafia, and Champion provided prizes. Amidst celebration, TuneIn awarded the first-ever TuneIn Digital Leader Award. The flute solos from presenters and Radio Award winners were merely an added bonus.

Continuing in the spirit of the day was the 5th Annual Medium Rotation College Day after party held at Solas. Sponsored by A Man A Plan A Canal, CJLO, Montreal, CFRE, Toronto/Mississauga, and CSCR/Fusion Radio, Scarborough/Toronto, the party featured DJ sets from Metz and the Luyas.
Kicking off a week of festivities was the annual, pre-CMJ Conflict Of Interest party at Rebel NYC. Thrown by The Syndicate and Taco Bell, the event was a benefit to support World Hunger Relief. Hosted by Andrew WK, the night featured live sets from the Hounds Below, Pacific Air, Team Spirit and Savoir Adore.

The post-rock guitars and garage sound of the Hounds Below got the night started. Playing against a backdrop of tweets about the evening’s event, the Detroit foursome melded with the excited energy of the room before ending its set with a heavy cover of the Pixie’s classic “Where Is My Mind?”

Blowing in from SoCal on a wave of sunny beats and bubbly synths, Pacific Air (formerly KOKO) continued to lift up the mood with its harmonies and beachy warmth. Team Spirit followed with a huge burst of energy, no doubt inspired by the high-fives bestowed upon them by the evening’s gregarious host.

Savoir Adore took the stage as the Twitter backdrop disappeared and the crowd got their synchronized dance on. From soaring melodies and light dance beats, the group downshifted into spacey reverb with an underwater echo and shimmer brought back to earth with heavy baselines.

Between bands, Andrew WK took the helm as DJ, spinning an eclectic mix of Top 40, old school, Motown favorites, and, of course, hair metal, with the concentrated enthusiasm you would expect from the sultan of party. Upstairs on the third floor, folks danced to DJ sets from DJ Mon Amie and Spindler.
When we spoke to College Radio Day founder Rob Quicke back in June, he told us he hoped to release an album to raise funds to help endangered radio stations. Released digitally on College Radio Day via iTunes and CDBaby is College Radio Day: The Album 2012, the compilation Quicke was dreaming of this summer.

Only 1,500 physical copies of this double album have been pressed, with all proceeds going to the non-profit College Radio Defense Fund. A panel of judges pulled from college radio stations across the country selected the tracks featured on the album. The first half offers “the best music performances in college radio stations across the USA,” while the second contains previously unreleased recordings from artists “who are publicly standing with college radio,” including the Civil Wars, Delta Spirit and the Front Bottoms. Stream the full College Radio Day album here.

June 6-9 brought KDHX’s annual Twangfest, an event that covers a multitude of musical styles in its celebration of all things twangy. We checked in with Chris Bay, member of the Twang Gang and interactive Web publisher at KDHX, to learn more about the St. Louis festival and how this year’s event went.

How did the idea for Twangfest come about?
Twangfest was started in the mid-’90s by a group of friends that participated in an alt-country internet message board named “Postcard 2,” which was an offshoot of the similarly-themed “Postcard” message board (named after the Uncle Tupelo song of the same name). Most of these folks were spread out across the country, with many in the Midwest, and the idea at the time was simply to get a group of bands together in a somewhat central location to throw a big party that celebrated the music they loved.

How long has Twangfest been going on?
Twangfest has been running continuously since 1997. We just wrapped up our 16th annual event.

Why focus on Americana?
Because that’s what we love. The roots of the event were in the aforementioned Postcard 2 message board that sprouted out of the alt-country/No Depression movement of the ’90s and early ’00s. The event has always been centered on Americana, however, we also branch out into pop, rock and soul. Detroit Cobras, Kelly Hogan, Steve Wynn And The Miracle 3 and Wussy have all performed at Twangfest. It’s hard to describe exactly what constitutes a Twangfest-compatible artist, but every member of the committee has a clear idea of what the event represents and who will fit. This year, we hosted Pokey LaFarge And The South City Three, Wussy, Langhorne Slim and John Doe on separate nights. Those four bands on the same bill would’ve been schizophrenic at best, but with focused billing, we were able to pull off four incredible nights of music that each had a very different feel.

How many artists play each year?
Fourteen to sixteen, typically.

Does St. Louis have a strong local scene, and does that play into who is chosen for the final lineup?
The St. Louis music scene is very healthy, and there are a lot of great bands here that fall under the Twangfest umbrella. We typically book three or four locals each year—with repeat performances by locals being rare—and we never have a shortage of locals to choose from.

The local scene doesn’t have much of an effect on the lineup, per se. The lineup is built out of the interests of Twangfest’s volunteer board of directors, dubbed the Twang Gang, and we add locals to the front of nearly every bill based on who else is playing that night.

What is the relationship between Twangfest and KDHX?
Twangfest began independent of KDHX. It has and always will be a grassroots, non-profit, volunteer-driven event. KDHX came on as a partner in 2006, after Twangfest 10. Nico Leone had recently become co-executive director at KDHX with the mission of increasing community involvement at the station, and he saw Twangfest as a unique entity whose mission very closely aligned with that of KDHX. So he approached the Twang Gang about folding Twangfest into KDHX as a way to benefit both. Twangfest benefits by having promotional, administrative and other responsibilities shared with KDHX. KDHX benefits by being a part of a unique event that draws in passionate music fans, and which has a well formed brand that fits well with the identity of KDHX.

The Twang Gang operates and makes most decisions about the operation of the event essentially independently from KDHX. It’s impossible to draw a line between the two, however. Of the Twang Gang’s seven current members, four are directly involved with KDHX. All of these four, including myself, are KDHX DJs, while three are KDHX employees and one is a member of KDHX’s board of directors.

How did this year go?
This year went extremely well. Two nights sold out in advance and saw packed, enthusiastic crowds. We had entirely positive feedback from artists and fans alike. Two of the bands performing in St. Louis for the first time, Humming House and Kasey Anderson And The Honkies, each made a big splash and won over loads of new fans. And John Doe, who is a personal favorite of many on the Twang Gang and who we’ve been trying to book for years, closed out the event. And we were able to bring in two veteran artists, Kelly Hogan and Wussy, which again are favorites of ours but very rarely perform in St. Louis. So that was a real treat.

Was this year’s Twangfest different from past years?
The one major difference between this year and years past was that two of the nights saw predominantly younger bands on the bill. Twangfest has always featured both veteran and younger artists, but in the last few years, the focus has tended to be on veteran performers. This mainly has to do with the taste of the organizers and of the event’s fans, many of which have been attending the event since the beginning or close to it. I handled a small portion of the booking last year, but this year I booked the entire event, and having a better balance between young and old was a high priority for me.

I’m not quite 30 years old, but I’m below the average age of Twangfest attendees. I go to a ton of shows, however, including a lot of Americana and roots shows, and I know that there are younger fans out there that Twangfest would appeal to and who can be the next generation of loyal attendees. And as much as I love Robbie Fulks or Jason And The Scorchers, those artists aren’t on the radar of most younger fans of Americana. That’s no fault of those artists or of those fans. It’s simply a matter of how people are exposed to and consume music.

October 11, 2011, saw the first College Radio Day, the nationwide bringing-together of college radio stations in the hopes of raising awareness and support for college radio. It proved to be enough of a success that a second CRD was planned for October 2, 2012. CMJ caught up with one of the founders of CRD, Rob Quicke of William Paterson University’s WPSC, to see what is in store for the second College Radio Day.

What sort of reception did the first College Radio Day get from colleges and from the world outside of college stations?
In a matter of months, over 360 college stations signed up to participate, and we got coverage from The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post and CMJ.com. The fact that so many stations came together for a day of unity for the very first College Radio Day surprised many people, including me. It was nice to see college radio get so much press coverage for a change. College radio is sorely undervalued and often overlooked by mainstream culture, so it was about time that we came together, got noticed and, hopefully, increased listenership and support for college and high school radio stations.

You recently announced a partnership with SoundCloud. How will that enhance CRD? What features will be available to participating stations?
SoundCloud is going to give every single participating college and high school radio station that participates in CRD a free ‘Premium Pro’ account worth $325. Stations will be able to use SoundCloud to host their content, allow listeners to share it everywhere (including embedding it in Facebook), as well as provide some tools that foster listener interaction like timed commenting. Some stations are already using it—WVYC 99.7 FM and WCCR, City College Radio, New York for example—and CRD used it last year to host and share our audio. It’’s really nice to have a benefit like this for stations to use if they so wish, and SoundCloud has made it clear that it totally supports the college radio community and CRD.

You have also announced the idea for a College Radio Day album. What inspired this idea?
The idea came from the desire to have a project that would bring college and high school radio stations together again throughout the year (not just on CRD), as well as to raise funds to promote and protect stations. It’’s another way that college radio stations can demonstrate their important contributions to musical culture and to remind people that they are tastemakers too.

The key to this being a success is in getting the college and high school stations to be involved with choosing and submitting tracks for this album. This will not be a typical album but will represent the entire movement of college radio. CRD’’s promotions team, which is made up of students from a variety of college radio stations throughout the country, will be organizing how the tracks are eventually selected. But it’’s important to say that we want as many stations and students to be involved with this as possible.

Will it be digital only, or are you making a physical copy?
It will be digital to start with, but if there is demand for it we want to do a CD version. Personally, I want to do a vinyl version as well,– but it depends if people are interested in buying that. We really want to make an album that is truly and authentically crafted in the spirit of college radio. We need to get this right, and if it becomes a tradition, it will grow organically in a good way. Either way, no guts, no glory.

Did any stations put together particularly interesting or noteworthy programming for the day?
On one hand some stations pulled out all the stops and showcased their best work and put on programming that was specially produced for the day. Yet many stations made the point to do their regular programming, arguing that if new listeners liked what they heard, then that’ is more representative of what they will be getting every day if they continue to listen. The beauty of CRD is that we don’’t tell people what to do. Some stations have the resources to do huge events; others have just enough students to go on the air and broadcast at all.

However, there were so many things going on that were exciting. Just to name a couple, Sting Radio at the University Of Texas At Brownsville teamed up with their Student Radio Club and a local production company to celebrate College Radio Day with BMX bike performers, two dance crew performances and a live graffiti art demonstration. WSOU at Seton Hall University, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., featured either an interview with a band that WSOU helped to break or with one of the student managers talking about why college radio was important to them. Finally, KTAI FM at Texas A & M University, Kingsville, had an 11-hour “blow-out on the Boulevard”; their main University Boulevard was closed off for the day for the festivities. Their celebrations included a classic car show, 10 live bands, horse and pony rides (seriously), their mascot “Porky” and also their cheerleaders!

What role do HQ stations play?
We look to the state HQ’s to help get stations involved and registered in their state. We also ask that they keep us updated on the day with news and developments of what’ is going on at their station and within their state. And we ask them to help be administrators on the individual state Facebook groups as well. After CRD we then send each one an award certificate to recognize their efforts as being leaders.

Are you seeing CRD spread to other countries?
Last year we knew that the next CRD in 2012 was going to be international. We already have 423 stations in 12 countries! It has been really exciting to see how other college radio organizations such as Red De Radio Universitaria De Latinoamérica Y El Caribe (who call October 2 “Dia De La Radio Universitaria”) in Colombia, Mexico, and El Salvador have partnered with us for all Latin American and Caribbean college radio stations. In Italy we are partnering with UStation.it and RadUni –Associazione Operatori Radiofonici Universitari to bring Italian college radio stations into the event. We also have stations in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Ghana! This is going to allow us to offer great opportunities for stations to participate in our CRD ‘twinning’ program –where stations can volunteer to be twinned with another college station around the world! Exciting times, as this is really uncharted territory now….

Earlier in the year, you joined with the New Jersey Devils for College Radio Night. How did this idea come about, and what did it entail?
The New Jersey Devils approached us with the idea after reading about CRD in a newspaper. Personally I know nothing about hockey and had never even been to a game! Yet, I recognized this was a really special opportunity for East Coast NJ/NYC area student broadcasters who are interested in sports broadcasting. The day was a great success, with all of the student representatives from 12 college stations being given access to watch the game in the press box as well as attend a panel on sports broadcasting as a career featuring Mike Levine (Senior Vice President Communications New Jersey Devils), Sherry Ross (WFAN), Matt Loughlin (WFAN), Steve Cangialosi (MSG+), Glenn “Chico” Resch (MSG+) and Ken Daneyko (three-time Stanley Cup Champion and Broadcaster MSG+)! The students then attended the coach’’s press conference after the game alongside the regular media.

Do you have more events like College Radio Night planned?
I hope so! I think we might do it again with the Devils in the fall because it was a success, and the students had a great experience with the game and connected well with the panelists who also answered all their questions.

What other new things do you have planned for the second College Radio Day?
Well, I think things are percolating nicely at the moment. The summer is actually when we get things really moving and the students, who are no longer in class, start to ramp things up and get ready for October.

May 16, 2012, will mark the first High School Radio Day, a day where high school radio stations across the country will unite to raise awareness of their existence. Founded by Pete Bowers, faculty adviser to Andover High School’s WBFH in Bloomfield Hills, MI, after getting involved with last year’s College Radio Day, the day is set to include publicity pushes, interviews and a nationwide Web chat with participating stations. Of the 200 active high school radio stations, as estimated by Bowers, nearly 30 have already signed on in support. With more than a dozen states being represented and support coming from College Radio Day and broadcasting organizations like Michigan Association Of Broadcasters, Bowers hopes that High School Radio Day can become an annual event. Stations interested in participating can do so through High School Radio Day’s website.

Why did you pick May for High School Radio Day?
I suggested that High School Radio Day be held in May, which is the month the first high school radio station signed on the air in 1949 (WNAS, New Albany, IN). Also, I wanted to have it before our schools got off for the summer and a good five months’ separation between HSRD and [College Radio Day].

Were you involved with College Radio Day last year?
I did register our station even though we were a high school station because I wanted to support their efforts to bring attention to college radio.

What is College Radio Day doing to help support High School Radio Day?
I have talked with the founder and president of CRD, Rob Quicke, who has given me some good advice for putting on our “Day” since they already did their “Day” last October. He has contacted other high school stations who registered for CRD to register for HSRD. We also have been endorsed by CBI, IBS and Michigan Association Of Broadcasters Foundation.

Why do you think there are so few high school radio stations?
It’s not easy getting one. It takes a lot of effort by someone at a school district to submit the proper paperwork to the FCC to get a license. Then you need the facilities and equipment, which can be expensive. Then they need to hire someone competent to manage the station. Then there are the costs of operating the station. That’s probably why a lot of high schools have had the plug pulled on them and went dark.

Why are high school stations so important?
It’s a two-sided coin. We educate high school students to be proficient as broadcasters over the public airwaves, job one. Second, our stations serve our communities well and make for great public relations vehicles for our school districts.

How are you spreading the word about HSRD?
We have given participating stations press release templates that they can use to send to local media. We’ve sent that press release to national media. We have links to our website on the CRD website, CBI website and IBS website. I’ve set up Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Do students receive class credit, or is it an extracurricular activity?
Class credit. I teach an intro class titled Exploring Electronic Media and an advanced class titled WBFH Staff.

Do you go off air during the summer or invite the community to get involved?
Our school district doesn’t budget for managers to work in the summer, so we have no live programs, but we are automated 24/7/365.

What sort of community/school involvement do you have?
We love to do remotes in our community, which is in Bloomfield Hills, a suburb of Detroit. Our favorite remote is at the Woodward Dream Cruise where a million people come out to watch 30,000 cars drive up and down Woodward Avenue.
