When Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti put out Before Today, his 4AD debut, the frontman was quick to explain that this was the type of album he had always wanted to put out, if given the equipment and budget. While bizarre themes and meandering genres made the album distinctly Ariel, the large leap from extreme lo-fi to more polished vocals and instrumentation was pretty jarring to longtime fans.

The success of Before Today marked the evolution of Ariel from outsider to quirky indie mainstay, and the accolades came pouring in. It only makes sense that the followup album would be met with great anticipation—and expectation.

Interestingly, the word that seems to keep reappearing in regard to Mature Themes is “frustrating.” Not good, bad or disappointing, but frustrating.

“Kinski Assassin” kicks off the album with a literal bang: “A Kinski assassin blew a hole through my chest,” followed by references to whores, testicles and meth—presumably those themes the album title warned us about. Ariel’s voice sounds like his best moments from The Doldrums with just the right amount of distortion—the quirky melody cushioning abrupt stylistic shifts. Similarly familiar vocals appear on “Is This The Best Spot” and pop against an array of electronic noises.

A return to little or no percussion other than synthetic drum noises is another major shift back to earlier recordings, and this is especially relevant on two of the most endearing tracks of the album. The title track features a rare moment of vocal clarity over a melodic guitar, sufficiently allowing Ariel’s voice to shine. “Only In My Dreams” is a perfectly packaged pop song with a jingle that feels extremely simple yet is actually the result of extreme care, a skill that vintage Ariel pulled off flawlessly.

So yes, Mature Themes is frustrating if not simply for the fact that Ariel has returned to his former outsider self. But if you know anything about Ariel Pink, it’s that he thrills on presenting listeners with a challenge. And if you choose to accept it, and know what you’re getting into, you’ll appreciate his weirdness and not spend the whole album wondering what the hell is going on—even when he’s singing about sinking battleships and eating schnitzel.

It took more than two years for Swedish pop group Niki And The Dove to make their debut album. As a result of quick popularity, early fans have already heard some of what would eventually become Instinct. But for the familiarity there is in work such a long time coming, the most impressive aspect of Instinct may just be that the trio manages to utilize its already successful ingredients to produce a pop creation strikingly more savory than what preceded it.

“Tomorrow” opens the album with a gentle embrace as Malin Dahlstrom’s voice warmly pours over a staccato synthesizer line. The greeting suddenly erupts into a soaring reception as the chorus takes the song from earthy and ethereal to a flourishing anthem of love. Electro-pop heavy “The Drummer” pulses with breezy, New Wave synths and dry beats. As the chorus strikes, Dahlstrom proclaims, “The pounding of my heart/I’m a drum, I’m a drum now/It is what makes me human,” and this explains what makes Niki And The Dove’s music so appealing: Behind the electronic pop that can keep you at arm’s length, there’s a lot of heart.

Aptly titled “The Gentle Roar” conveys power in its sparseness. This is the most spacious song on the album and features Dahlstrom whispering most of her lines over tribal-sounding beats. It’s a creepy song, but like all of Niki And The Dove’s music, “The Gentle Roar” is still driving and upbeat. On the opposite end, “The Fox” is the most congested track. Like “The Gentle Roar,” there are witchy vibes all over this song, but there’s also the presence of nature, an element which grounds a body of work that could border on overly unrealistic. The narrative-heavy song has a dark edge, accentuated by jagged slices of synthesizer, filled with natural imagery about foxes, woods, purple skies, flowers. With so many different elements—hands clapping, glass smashing (or are those chains clanking?), synthesizers dancing high and low—this song should be a disaster, but it speaks to the skill of the group that its most complex track also turns out to be the most stunning.

Instinct is an electro-pop album, but it’s got that New Order-style darkness that gives it a comforting weight; this is that kind of bummer music that will make you dance. Case in point is fan favorite “DJ, Ease My Mind.” Dahlstrom says she wants “to forget,” “to disappear,” for the “lights to blind [her],” which is a more poetic way of describing the need to go out and rage after you’ve gone through a breakup. “DJ, ease my mind, will you?/Play that song again/’Cause we were in love/Before, before the rain began,” she requests, adding, “And if I cry I’ll cover my ears.” But the chorus is so infectious that you barely notice the tears in her eyes.

The dudes of U.K. slacker-pop band Fanzine started playing together at the age of 12. “It was always dumb, funny stuff—joke rap and metal songs, that sort of thing,” says singer and guitarist Jock Norton. “We didn’t start taking it seriously until we were about 18, at which point we realized we’d always found it easy to make quite accomplished-sounding songs, even in a dumb way, and that if we tried to do something properly, it’d probably sound quite good.”

Suffice to say, when Fanzine sets its mind to something, they accomplish it. Honing its grunge-pop sound and DIY ethos, live shows led to management and eventual exposure to U.S. label Fat Possum, which released the band’s “Roman Holiday” single in 2011. Playing with the likes of Oberhofer, Here We Go Magic and Porcelain Raft, as well as long-time friends Yuck and fellow newcomers Gross Magic, Fanzine is working to solidify its spot in the U.K.’s contemporary drone-heavy indie-pop scene. And yes, Fanzine does make actual zines.

Listing Buddy Holly as well as Pavement among their major influences, the members of Fanzine employ infectious melodies and Weezer-worthy riffs that allow them to create a sound that’s familiar yet unique. The fuzzy surfer-pop single “L.A.” marks Fanzine’s first release on Best Fit, the label that may release the band’s debut album. But the previously almost entirely DIY group doesn’t foresee the partnership causing any major alterations in the creative process. “Nothing’s changed in the way we do things really,” says Norton. “We just try to keep in mind that we’re making music for fun and not to get too caught up in anything as far as the industry goes.”

That doesn’t mean there weren’t a few hiccups along the way, like during an early show at Brighton’s Great Escape Festival. “We played there a few years ago when we used backing tracks, and the whole thing was a bit more electronic sounding and completely bombed,” Norton recalls. “It was our second show, and we had no idea how to play live. We were shit scared, and our manager stopped answering our calls the next day.” The band got the chance to play the festival again recently, and Norton says the show felt, “like a real victory.”

Though temporarily on live show hiatus while they finish up their album, Jock and the band want you to know that music isn’t the only thing you can look forward to at a Fanzine show. “Ed’s got quite incredible hair,” he says. “It’s not as big as Jonny’s [from Yuck], but he’s up front so he’s got perspective on his side. I sweat at quite an alarming rate too, so by the end of the gig I look like a NASCAR driver after a race. They lose like two stone in water weight, don’t they? I was told that. Maybe it’s not true.”

Both Hudson Mohawke and Lunice have been working hard to solidify their place in the music world. Mohawke has been in the studio with Kanye West, Lunice has worked with Diplo, and both have contributed their musical chops to rising star Azealia Banks. With track records like that, it’s easy to understand why a collaboration between the two would elicit high expectations. Luckily, Mohawke and Lunice do not disappoint on their TNGHT EP.

A combination of thumping bass and various samples seems to be the methodology behind each of the tracks on the EP, but that does not in any way mean the pair plays it safe or sounds formulaic. “Higher Ground” opens with static, laden hand claps and chopped-up, reverberating vocals, topped by a sparse drum beat. This combo is soon joined by blasting synths and an aggressive bassline. The moment the beat bursts through, the song is taken to a completely different level. Bare moments juxtaposed against beat explosions demonstrate the duo’s unique ability to create space, as well as expanse, in each track.

“Bugg’n” booms with a menacingly harsh beat drenched in echo, with the addition of a baby noise that I’m pretty sure was taken straight off of “Are You That Somebody” by Aaliyah. The result is a wacky fusion that only extreme attention to detail could pull off successfully. Sample-heavy “Easy Easy” features everything from breaking glass to a gun cocking, layered with a Super Mario-esque high pitched beat; pretty much the antithesis of what the name suggests. Each song fits together in the pair’s futuristic style but never without wisely placed, unexpected elements to keep you guessing.

A collaboration between two heavyweight producers could turn out rather messy. In this case, Mohawke and Lunice prove that you can strike a perfect balance between experimentation and restraint.

George Lewis Jr. is a great storyteller. Since Twin Shadow’s debut album, Forget, in 2010, there has been much discussion regarding ’80s revivalism, reinterpretation of New Wave and the birth of chillwave. But throughout the debate, it was impossible for anyone to ignore that amongst Twin Shadow’s reference-heavy beats lies undeniably strong lyrical content, which allows Lewis to execute this newly created hybrid genre nearly flawlessly.

From the moment “Five Seconds” was released as the first single, it was blatantly apparent that a new Twin Shadow had been conceived. According to Lewis, Confess was inspired by the clarity and fullness he felt in getting back on his motorcycle after a long break following an accident. He had a friend on the back of his bike at the time of the crash, and in discussing his feelings toward that friend the instant before the accident Lewis has said, “I remember in that moment I wanted to say everything to him. How could I say everything in a split second? How could I bury my words in his heart?”

The opener, “Golden Light,” surges ahead with light steel-drum-sounding and skittering, synthetic beats, while “Patient” has major Prince vibes. “Beg For The Night” is easily the album highlight with a steady build that opens to an expansive, soaring chorus. “Five Seconds” is perhaps the best exploration of Lewis’s overwhelming urgency to share his feelings right before his accident. The song jumps in immediately with a racing drum machine pulse, and moments of acoustic guitar contrast with the spiky electric guitar and synthesizer sounds. The mixture of the unplugged and the electronic creates a tension in the music, which is bolstered by the frustration and anguish in Lewis’s voice as he sings, “Five seconds to your heart/Straight to your heart/I can’t get to your heart.”

Forget was dreamy and nostalgic. Lewis used that album as catharsis, giving the sense that writing it down was the only way he knew how to truly let go and move on. Two years, a motorcycle accident and lifestyle reevaluation later, Lewis is back and ready to confront his music with a new-found energy and boldness. The infectious beats and catchy hooks are still a driving force, but Lewis has abandoned the bedroom vibes to surge ahead with full-on amphetamine-induced vigor.

Adam Pavao and Sarah Ruba may be the perfect couple. Sure, that’s an easy statement to make about any young, hip, attractive pair. But take one listen to their music, and it becomes blatantly clear that the synchronicity between this duo is a match made in pop heaven. Correction: “future pop” heaven.

As any great couple will attest, balance is key. While Ruba’s vocals are stark and often compared to Sade, Pavao’s burgeoning synths project them into the space-age. Each song feels full yet empty, in a way that could only be accomplished by two people who know each other inside and out.

“Relax Your Mind” combines elements of R&B, soul and a dubstep beat with an undeniably catchy hook. The lyrics discuss the formation of a relationship, and Ruba (accurately) emphasizes that what they have created between them is something all their own. “Teen Need” marks one of the funkier moments on the album, with less minimalism and more dancey synths and layered vocals. While it is somewhat of a departure from other songs, it still offers the unique contrast that New Look seems to have mastered. As if we needed any reassurance, “You And I” features both Pavao and Ruba’s vocals repeating, “You and I were meant to be together” over a bouncy pop backing beat.

They say opposites attract, and in the case of New Look’s debut album, this could not prove to be more true. The duo has managed to create its own form of stark intimacy that the members, luckily for us, have translated nearly flawlessly into musical form.

Few bands would complain about having a world-conquering smash hit single on a debut album. “Sweet Disposition” off of Australian group the Temper Trap’s Conditions took the band from just another indie-pop group to expansive notoriety, thanks in large part to Dougy Mandagi’s sweet falsetto voice. But massive success from one song can sometimes cause growing pains, especially as the band tries to define its place in the music world. Three years later, the Temper Trap has released a very different self-titled second album.

When a band self-titles anything but its debut album, it usually serves as a message of intent: “This is what we are ACTUALLY about.” Perhaps in an attempt to show us who they really are, the members of Temper Trap ditch much of Conditions’ warmth for a harsher edge. Oh, and, if you are hoping for Mandagi’s beloved soaring falsetto to dominate, you will be sorely disappointed.

Trembling Hands by The Temper Trap

The opening song, “I Need Your Love,” is the most reminiscent of the Temper Trap we knew previously. Heavy synth and an infectious chorus allow it to be filed nicely alongside the band’s best moments. “Trembling Hands” marks another success on the album and showcases Mandagi’s voice as it sweeps across the lush musical background. And “The Sea Is Calling” provides us with another much-anticipated dose of his higher-range singing.

The weakest moment on the album is the wannabe manifesto “London’s Burning,” which is meant to be a commentary on the London riots. The song is laden in audio clips of news reporters and looters, but with lyrics like, “Who’s the one to blame when the children go insane?”, it is clear that as far as anthems go, this song has little to offer.

So this is the real Temper Trap: less fuzz, more grit. The song “Where Do We Go From Here” presents a question that the group will have to face on its next album; and from what you get from this sophomore release, the answer isn’t entirely clear.
