It’s enough that you’ll go home from CMJ Music Marathon 2013 and sit at the local pub, wowing your pals with Big Apple tales while trying to recall all the great bands you saw. But there’re bound to be a couple musician chums who are going to ask if you got to any of the panels. Equally intriguing and 10 times more informative than all the boozing/banding you did, the panels, panelists and all the expert information they impart are arguably the most unique and useful aspects of CMJ Music Marathon every year, and 2013 was no different.
Topics discussed throughout the panels this year covered the whole gamut of surviving this crazy, ever-evolving music biz. From discovering new revenue streams, to why we need to discover them (no more record label advances, kids); from streamlining tour plans, to debating whether musicians should even tour anymore in this increasingly pricey, incrementally online world (answer: yes, you should tour); digging up hidden royalties, the merits of crowd-sourcing, the growth of music festivals, songwriting basics, getting busy with all those digital hype outlets, practical legal mumbo-jumbo, and numerous debatable answers to “Um, how do I make it?” Whew. Hope you took notes.
So scroll down for photos from the panels, the green rooms, and more because we know you overslept and missed a few of them that you were really planning on seeing.
