How many times have you played CMJ?
This will be our third straight year playing at CMJ, starting with 2009. I had a great day going to see Shilpa Ray and her Happy Hookers open up for Cotton Jones at the Knitting Factory last year—two bands that I love a lot on the same bill. Kind of a slow paced, afternoon-ish show—nice chill vibes and great people everywhere!

How far will you travel to get here?
We’ve lived in Brooklyn the whole time and continue to live there.

What’s your favorite NYC venue/snack joint/bar?
Cake Shop, Cameo Gallery, Death By Audio, Glasslands, Chavela’s for food in Prospect Heights, Washington Commons, which is a bar in Prospect Heights. Lucali for pizza.

Which other artists are you looking forward to seeing?
Widowspeak, Grass Widow, Dum Dum Girls, Wild Flag and Zola Jesus.

If you could be any type of sandwich what would you be and why?
A vegetarian Philly cheesesteak with peppers, onions, provolone and American cheese, mushrooms and really hot sauce or hot peppers. I would want to be this sandwich because it is the sandwich I love the most as a non-sandwich (human). Also, I think it says a few things like: “I got grit cause I’m from Philly!” “But it’s cool cause I don’t kill animals” and “I love things hot and spicy!”

Backwords plays Bowery Electric tonight at 8 p.m. as part of the Tijuana Gift Shop showcase.
